Project summary

An implemented residential space-planning project for an occupied Paris apartment. Working with the family’s existing furniture and measured dimensions, I developed layouts to improve fit, circulation, functional zoning and visual balance rather than redesigning the apartment as an empty conceptual shell.

Planning through options

The bedroom study used option testing rather than a single aesthetic proposal. I developed six alternative layouts and evaluated each of them against everyday use:

• Furniture fit and bed orientation
• Bathroom access and the relationship to the balcony
• Chair swivel clearance and workstation comfort
• Natural light, and glare on the monitor
• Wardrobe position and access to shelving
• Noise adjacency, and the separation of sleeping from working

Final strategy. Create distinct sleeping, wardrobe and workstation zones while preserving daylight and comfortable workstation clearance. Shelving was used as a spatial divider rather than a full partition.

What the study showed

Small residential spaces benefit from explicit trade-off testing: not every visually attractive arrangement is equally usable.

Outcome

The family followed the proposed arrangement in the living and dining area, and in the bedroom planning decisions.
